Mark Williams’ new cue has been slammed as horrific – but the former world champion has hit back at critics.
The Welshman has won zero prize money since returning from the Saudi Arabia Masters final earlier this month after suffering first match losses in both the English Open and the British Open.
Three-times world champion Williams crashed out of the first round of the British Open, losing to Rory Thor.
It meant Williams was forced to return home from the tournament he won last season beating Mark Selby in the final.
Williams’ started the season in top form and was just one pot away from landing the mega £500,000 top prize and winning the Saudi Arabia Masters until Judd Trump produced a total clearance to break his heart.
But since that event Mark Williams has opted to play with a new cue and his results have since tarnished.
New cue ‘annoying’
Snooker fans have described the sound of Williams’ cue as “annoying” when he strikes the cueball in televised matches.
A Facebook user commented: “Every time I hear Mark Williams strike the cueball I check the floor for diamonds.”
Seven-times world champion Stephen Hendry said his season could continue to decline if he sticks with new cue. Speaking after Williams’ 4-1 loss to Thor, Hendry said on ITV: ‘It was a very, very poor performance. He’s using a new cue, I hope he was paid nicely because it’s going to derail his season.
“It sounded horrific and his play was horrific. It was very bad.”
But Williams has hit back on social media. Suggesting he will stick with the new cue.
