World number one Judd Trump believes snooker in Germany could be even bigger and the nation deserves to host more major tournaments.
The German Masters, taking place this week in Berlin, is the only German-based tournament on the World Snooker Tour calendar.
But the three-times German Masters winner thinks that needs to change.
With its lofty reputation, the German Masters has become popular among both fans and players since its revival in 2011. The tournament is held in Berlin’s Tempodrom which has become a popular venue for players and fans alike.
Speaking to The Metro, reigning champion Trump spoke of his admiration for the competition. He said: “Berlin is probably third place in terms of the crowd interaction and how good the crowds are, especially when you get to that final weekend and how passionate they are.”
“‘I think Germany should be up there, just behind the UK (Championship). But it’s not really gone anywhere, it’s stagnated a little bit. There should be a few changes to make it a bit bigger than it is. The crowd over there deserve it.”
Trump: Snooker in Germany could be huge
‘It’s a little bit disappointing because I feel like they could even hold the Tour Championship or something over there. The crowd deserve something bigger. It’s excellent to have a tournament there, but the fans deserve a bigger, more prestigious event.”
It’s been a remarkable season so far for the Englishman. He added the UK Championship to his ever-growing list of titles. The ‘Ace in the Pack’ has now won £1,295,200 this season – the most lucrative in snooker history.
Additionally, Trump has made 49 century breaks so far this season, leaving him with a fighting chance to claim a further £100,000 bonus for being the first player to make 100 centuries in the 2024/25 campaign.
The winner of this week’s German Masters will win £100,000 and the Brandon Parker trophy.
